An experience report on Adaptive Skiing
Many reports have documented that skiing with a transfemoral prosthesis is almost impossible. Therefore you still meet skiers with too much strain on their healthy leg – which can severely harm it.
My name is Alina Schuldes and I have been skiing since I am three. Right from birth I've not had my hip, calf bone and upper leg. I took part in my first ski lesson at the Yellow Power Ski School when I was five. The expert team of Herbert Gurschler supported me right from the start.
At the beginning I have skied with normal ski poles. But then Herbert had the idea to fix both ski tips with an elastic strip. I couldn't control my right ski, it was more difficult than we thought. Bending the prosthesis is not possible if using normal poles. So I skied with one leg stretched and the other leg bended. Some other ski instructors heard about my new technique and made an experiment: they fixed a pole to one leg and tried skiing. When I was ten I followed my mum's advice and tested the new crutches equipped with little skis. As I had no experience at all, Herbert Gurschler introduced me to his best expert in the field. We received this new type of crutch ski poles 24 hours in advance and had enough time to try it. After a couple of ski lessons on snow with the Yellow Power ski instructors in Sölden, I had achieved my goal. I can only recommend to try and test it yourselves at this expert ski school! Everyone – disabled or not – can learn how to ski thanks to their high commitment, their longstanding experience and their incredible patience.
All I can say is that I would have never learned skiing without the expert team of the Yellow Power Ski School! I am very happy and grateful for the immense support during the last years. So I could prove something very important: skiing with a transfemoral prosthesis is great fun!
